History of Hookah

History of Hookah

Hookah History;

Hookah is the most widely spread and used name for this smoking device, it goes by many other different names around the world. Some of them include nargeela, nargile, narghile, shisha, sheesha, okka, kalyan, ghelyoon, ghalyan, goza, hubble-bubble, etc. Most of these expressions are of  Arab,  Indian, Turkish or Persian origin.

A hookah is a single- or multi-stemmed instrument for vaporizing and smoking flavored cannabis,  or sometimes opium, whose vapor or smoke is passed through a water basin—often glass-based—before inhalation.

What Does Hookah Mean?

The term hookah is derived from the word haqqa, which means “pot, jar”  Though it goes by many names, as we mentioned above, people in the U.S. like to refer to this type of smoking device as shisha. This is, however, incorrect as shisha refers only to the glass base of this instrument, but the term did catch on.

Hookah History and Culture

The introduction of tobacco to medieval India by the Jesuits, the waterpipe was invented by Abu’l-Fath Gilani, a Persian physician of Akbar, in the Indian city of Fatehpur Sikri during Mughal India, the hookah spread from the Indian subcontinent to Persia first, where the mechanism was modified and then reached the lands of the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) where it was developed further close to its current shape.

During the Ottoman Empire reign, hookah really took off. The Ottoman Sultans even insisted on taking portraits with their hookahs. It became somewhat of a status symbol and important people liked to smoke out of it at diplomatic meetings and royal dinners. Each Sultan had a Hookah designed especially for himself, even in those days these special Hookahs would need to be designed so that the flavour and smoke was easily inhaled, as today Kings Comfort designs it models with the same philosophy and adding new technology.
